Wise Choices for Cleaner Waters

The Rain to Rivers...Wise Choices for Cleaner Waters is an education campaign sponsored by Rain to Rivers of Western Wisconsin, and is aimed at protecting and improving the quality of local lakes, streams, rivers, and wetlands.

Keep Our Waterways Clean This Fall

As fall arrives, falling leaves and debris can pile up, posing a threat to our storm drains and waterways. When leaves, trash, and other debris clog gutters and storm drains, they can cause flooding and carry pollutants into our rivers, lakes, and streams, harming water quality and wildlife.

Key Tip: Keep Gutters and Storm Drains Clear

Prevent leaves and trash from entering storm drains by regularly clearing your gutters and nearby drains. Blocked storm drains can lead to polluted runoff that negatively impacts our waterways.

What You Can Do:

  • Clear Debris Regularly: Rake leaves and remove trash from your yard, sidewalks, and gutters before rain arrives.

  • Compost or Mulch Leaves: Instead of letting leaves wash into storm drains, compost them or use them as mulch to enrich your soil.

  • Dispose of Trash Properly: Ensure trash and recyclables are secured in bins to prevent them from blowing into streets or drains.

  • Check Storm Drains: If you see debris clogging a nearby storm drain, safely remove it or report it to local authorities.

By keeping leaves and trash out of gutters and storm drains, you can help prevent flooding and protect our waterways. Let’s work together to keep our environment clean this fall!
