Protect Our Waterways This Spring

Spring rains are here, bringing vital water to our landscapes but also the risk of stormwater runoff. Runoff can carry lawn fertilizers, pesticides, and other pollutants into storm drains, rivers, and lakes, harming water quality and aquatic life.

Key Tip: Don’t Fertilize Before Rain

Avoid applying fertilizers when rain is forecast within the next 48 hours. Rain can wash fertilizers off your lawn and into waterways, contributing to nutrient pollution that causes algal blooms and oxygen depletion in our waters.

What You Can Do:

  • Check the Weather: Only fertilize during dry periods to ensure nutrients stay in your lawn.

  • Use Wisely: Apply fertilizers sparingly and follow label instructions.

  • Go Natural: Consider organic or slow-release fertilizers to reduce runoff risks.

  • Sweep Up: If fertilizer spills onto driveways or sidewalks, sweep it back onto your lawn to prevent it from washing away.

By timing lawn care wisely, you can keep your yard healthy and our waterways clean. Let’s work together to protect our environment this spring!
